PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

The images in this series are made using camera-less photography techniques and are entirely dependent on the sun. Pinhole photography uses the most basic concepts of a camera; a light proof box, an aperture and light sensitive material. Solography is a photographic technique using a pinhole camera and light sensitive material which is exposed directly, without the use of a further chemical process. The images register the trace of the sun through a very small aperture and this allows almost infinite exposure times.

The appeal of making an image this way is that it slows the process right down. You can’t rush through it or speed it up. The image will take as long as it takes and this ultimately depends on the elements and how much light reaches the paper. The resulting image is cumulative, time compressed. Everyday movements that pass in front of the camera are too fleeting to register and so all that remains are objects that are fixed or constant and the movement of the earth recorded by the trace of the sun. The aligning of the spring equinox with the slow emergence from lockdown and the return of the sun seemed to lend itself well to the making of these images.
